Turtle Race Winners!

One of Cass County’s great treasures, Longville’s weekly summer turtle races, had another great event on Wednesday. Everything was perfect- the weather, the great racers, the food, the games, and the contests. There were 370 racers that competed for the top honors.

There were 14 resorts that competed for the top resort racing honors. To top it off, The Minnesota Office of Tourism, had a photographer in Longville on Wednesday to capture the excitement of the races for a future issue of their tourism magazine.

The Grand Racing Winner was eleven-year-old Kelsie Imgrund of Brainerd and the Grand Slowpoke Winner was twelve-year-old Ellie Copeland of Brownberg, Indiana.

From the fourteen resorts that competed in the resort turtle race, eleven-year-old Erin Jacobson of Monticello was the winner. She and her family were vacationing at DOK Holiday Resort on Woman Lake. The resorts included: Trappers Landing, Mascot Resort, Thunder Lake Lodge, Timber Trails Resort, In the Wilds Resort, Balsam Bay Resort, Little Ponderosa Resort, The Longville Inn, The Longville Campground, Girl Lake Resort, Green Roof Lodge, Kee Nee Moo Sha, Broadwater Lodge, and DOK Holiday Resort.

From among the many dance participants, some dancers come up on the Turtle Mobile Stage to lead the dances. The Chicken Dance Singers included: Judy Daley of Torrance, CA; Ilyanna Mix of Bemidji; Christine Melling of Brooklyn Park; Joe Klukken of Plymouth, and Angela Swenson of Stillwater.

The YMCA dancers whose performance was well worth the price of admission to any event were Joseph Ikier of Fridley, Justin Murray of Inver Grove Heights, Ashley Tangen of Fridley and Erin Jacobson of Monticello.

BL Broadcasting of Brainerd provides free tickets to Valley Fair and Mall of America events at the turtle races. These tickets have a value each week of nearly $400. BL Broadcasting operates several radio stations including WJJY, 106.7 FM. The winners of the Valley Fair tickets were Olivia Koski of Savage, Jake Lobin of Ham Lake, and Ellie Youngquist of Owatona. The winner of the $200 package of tickets to events at Mall of America was Cole Schwerin of Otsego.
