Turtle Race Winners!

August 12, 2009

The blistering heat and sweltering sun didn’t diminish the enthusiasm of the participants at Wednesday’s turtle races. There were 401 racers from all over the Northland area that came together with their siblings and parents or grandparents to enjoy an afternoon of family fun.

While moms and dads ducked under business awnings or shopped in the air conditioned comfort of the businesses, the kids were out side on main street hula hooping, dancing, and racing.

An exceptionally melodic group of chicken dance singers that call themselves the Bondurant Five, gave the Chicken Dance Song CD quality vocals. The five, from Bondurant, Iowa were Ashley Burrows, Madi Atzen, Lexi Atzen, Katie Norton and Sydney Sinclair. In the same style, four young people led the YMCA dance contest. They were Alexis Britten of Blaine, Reid Olson of Coon Rapids, Samantha Cox of Texas, and Eliomar Julkowski of Mora.

Seventeen resorts competed in the Resort Turtle Race. They were Pine Ridge Resort, Balsam Bay Resort, Trappers Landing, Little Boy Resort, Longville Inn, Camp O’ My Dreams Resort, Pine Haven Resort, Maple Trails Resort, Idle A While Resort, Little Ponderosa Resort, Broadwater Lodge, Cedar Beach Resort, Girl Lake Resort, Timber Trails Resort, Kee Nee Moo Sha Resort, Minne Teepee Resort, and Hiawatha Beach Resort. The victor and Grand Champion of the Resort Turtle Race was eight year old Nick Ritland of Waterloo, IA who with his family was vacationing at Girl Lake Resort.

Three lucky young people went home with free tickets to Valleyfair and events at Mall of America. The MOA ticket package, worth $200 was won by Braycen Smith of Fairbault. The Valleyfair tickets were won by Emily Daniel of New Hope and Claire Kiewatt of Maple Grove. The tickets are provided by BL Broadcasting of Brainerd. Their flag ship station is WJJY 106.7 FM.

With 401 racers competing, there was enormous joy when the Grand Slowpoke champion, six year old Maggie McLaughlin of Woodbury was crowned. Likewise the Grand Champion, nineteen year old Stephanie Gallaghers of Osseo, was all smiles as she stepped into the winners circle. This was the third time in 8 years that a member of the Gallagher family has been crowned the Grand Champion. Stephanie’s father says that they train and bring their own turtle to the race.

A group of dedicated volunteers scampered home to the lake after working hard under the hot sun.
