Turtle Race Archives - June 16th, 2010

Weather can make or break any outdoor event and with the Longville Turtle Races, nice weather is especially important. Weather for the second turtle race of the season was perfect. Put together perfect weather, a great family activity, wonderful volunteers, and an enthusiastic crowd and it’s just a great Turtle Race. The 280 racers plus several hundred spectators and pre-race participants enjoyed their afternoon in Longville.

Sixteen Resorts competed for the honor as the week’s Resort Turtle Race best racer. They were Pikedale Resort, Pine Haven Resort, Little Boy Resort, In The Wild Resort, Balsam Bay Resort, Thunder Lake Lodge, Pleasant Pines Resort, Kee Nee Moo Sha Resort, Longville Inn, Trapper’s Landing, Lakewood Lodge, Tall Pine Lodge, Long Birch Lodge, Woman Lake Lodge, Timber Trails Resort and, Green Roof Lodge. The winner of the Resort Turtle Race was seven-year-old Benjamin Strei of Waconia, MN who with his family was vacationing at Thunder Lake Lodge.

Pre-race activities were very popular with many participating. Chicken Dance Singers who gave an outstanding performance, included: Natalie from New Castle, Indiana; Austin from Shipshewanna, Indiana; Rachel from Forest Lake, MN; Ally from Longville, MN; and Liz from Rochester, MN. The YMCA Dancers were again sparkling in their performance. They included: Alyssa from Zumbrota, MN; Lydia from Mankato, MN; Alex from Superior, WI; and Sam from Rochester, MN.

It was a great day for racing and the Grand Race winner was two-year-old Colin Sachs from St. Paul Park, MN. There was a tie for the Grand Slowpoke honors with three-year old Lucas Pietan of Lake Crystal, MN and 31-year old Justin Weingartner of Coon Rapids, MN emerging as winners.

Longville must be the Volunteer Capital of the World as each week about 22 Longville area residents make Turtle Races a great family activity. Jan Elliott and Dodee Colberg registered racers. Rose Franta and Marilyn Jass sold tickets and souvenirs. Marge McDonald and Pat Bottast managed the prize tables. Game operators included: Kathy Sweeney, representing Woodland Insurance; Ed Lammers, representing Lakeland Promotions; Jamie Riendeau, representing Thunder Lake Lodge; Dennis and Elsie Hagen; Saundra Martell; Chuck Colberg; Amanda Mix and Kendyll Week; and Debbie and Laura Oates. Gordon Atzen popped a bunch of popcorn. Set-up and tear down was accomplished in record time by Steve Shallbetter, Don Shurtleff, Bob Carey, Tony Ozark, and a great team from Camp Olson. Steve Shallbetter and John and Sandy Weins handled the announcing duties on the Turtle Mobile. Next race is Wednesday, June 23.
