June 23 Longville Turtle Race Story
Mainstreet of Longville was packed and bustling on Wednesday as 351 turtle racers competed for top honors. An estimated crowd of 1100 spectators watched the festivities, or played the county fair type of games, or participated in the hula hoop contests and dance contests.

Special guests at the races were Donna Carpenter of Hartford, Wisconson and Robert, “Hobba” Nyvall of Longview, Washington. Both are siblings of Russ Nyvall who started the Longville turtle races back in the mid-1960’s. Both enjoyed their afternoon at the races. A group of 23 volunteers did a great job of making the afternoon a delight for the vacationers. Mackenzie and Michaela Macfarlane helped Pat Boen with judging. Dodee Colberg, Stan Johnson, and Rose Franta registered racers. Kathy Sweeney, Kathy Froehlig, and Sue Meyer sold tickets and souvenirs. Stan, The Man, Johnson who also helps with other areas of turtle races, and Jane Brophy managed the prize table.
