Turtle Race Archives - July 7th, 2010

Just the opposite of the “perfect storm” Wednesday, July 7 was the “perfect day for turtle racing”.

The 502 “to-date season record” racers that jammed Longville’s mainstreet plus the estimated 1500 spectators and game participants made Longville the center of activity in Cass County on Wednesday. Kids, moms, dads, and grandmas/grandpas jammed the center circle to participate in hula hoop contests and win great prizes.

Again, they all came back to the circle to participate in dance contests. A special feature of the Chicken Dance contest is the singers who come up on the turtle mobile stage to sing the Chicken Dance song. They were Anna and Laura from Plymouth, Gabby and Erica from Roscoe, Ill., and Kelsey from Lino Lakes. There is also a big demand by participants to lead the YMCA dance. Some of the best dancers on this week were Tabitha and Rumyana from Minneapolis, Alex from Superior, WI, and Nicolas from Amery, WI.

The first race of the day was the Resort Turtle Race. Thirteen resorts participated. They were Broadwater Lodge, Kee Nee Moo Sha Resort, Austin’s Swamp, Evergreen Lodge, Shores of Leech Lake, Mascot Resort, Maple Trails Resort, Little Ponderosa Resort, Pine Haven Resort, Pine Ridge Resort, Happiness Resort, Quiet Woods Resort, and Minne Tepee Resort. The winner of the Resort Turtle Race was seven-year-old Paul Towley, who with his family was vacationing at Austin’s Swamp.

Outlasting all of the 502 racers were two champions. Eight-year-old Anna Hanson from Chanhassen, MN was the Grand Winner. She had caught her own turtle at their lake home on Crystal Lake. She had named her turtle “Crystal”. The Grand Slowpoke winner was thirteenyear- old Hannah Schmid from Worthington, MN.

Winner of the packet of tickets to the Mall of America was six-year-old Tanner Miller from Otsego, MN. Winner of the ticket package to Valley Fair was nine-year-old Caitlyn Storley of Rosemount, MN. Both ticket packages are provided courtesy of BL Broadcasting in Brainerd. WJJY plus several other stations in Brainerd are owned by BL Broadcasting.

Twenty-five weary volunteers made the afternoon a joy for the participants. Ryan and Marisa Skajewski helped Pat Boen, representing Gallery of Homes, judging the events. Rose Franta, Stan Johnson, and Jan Elliott registered racers. Dodee Colberg and Sue Meyer sold tickets and souvenirs. Karen Nelson and Sara Felton managed the prize table. Game operators were Jamie Riendeau, representing Thunder Lake Lodge; Ashlee Daudt, representing Frosty’s; Kathy Sweeney, representing Woodland Insurance; Debbie and Laura Oates; Jane Brophy; Chuck Colberg; Mike Froehlig; Elsie Hagen; Ivy McQuaig; and Elin Limburg. Gordon Atzen, with the help of his assistant, Bill Newell, popped a record number of 300 bags of popcorn. Stan Johnson and Dave Wodrich monitored the street. Set-up and tear down were handled by Steve Shallbetter, Don Shurtleff, Brandon Ahrenholz, Bob Carey, Tony Ozark, and a great team from Camp Olson. Bob Carey was in charge of hand washing. Announcing duties fell to John and Sandy Weins and Steve Shallbetter. The next race is Wednesday, July 14.
