Turtle Race Archives - July 14th, 2010

Longville Turtle Race Story for July 14, 2010. Turtle racers dodged a few sprinkles in the early afternoon then settled in for a great Wednesday of turtle racing on mainstreet in downtown Longville. A day-full of activities are packed into the three hours of pure family entertainment each Wednesday during the summer in downtown Longville.

All of the 416 racers seemed to experience the “thrill of victory” even though they may not have won one of the three coveted championship prizes.

Pre-race activities again were very popular. Hula hoop kids, moms, dads, and grandpas and grandmas swarmed out on the circle to exhibit their circular skills. Dance contests provided the most and least experienced dancers an opportunity to “strut their stuff”. A group of vocalists, picked from the Chicken Dance contestants sang the Chicken Dance song. They included: Siena from West Des Moines, Iowa; Karissa from Bancroft, Iowa; Ben from Glenview, Ill; and Muhammed from Burnadas, Egypt. The YMCA dance leaders included: Karl from Genera, Ill; Julie from Burnsville, MN; Amy from Plymouth, MN; Angel from Dubuquo, IO; Jack from Plymouth, and Morgan from Lake Lillian, MN.

Two racers won ticket packages to Valley Fair and Mall of America. Cassy Saxton from Eden Prairie, MN won the Valley Fair ticket package and Alex Gabel from Brooklyn Park won the Mall of America ticket package. The tickets are provided each week by BL Broadcasting in Brainerd. Their flagship radio station is WJJY FM 106.7. However, they also operate B93.3 Country; the Power Loon, 107.5 FM; Cool 103.5, Oldies; Business Radio KVBR AM1340; and The Fan, 1380 AM.

Ten Resorts participated in the Resort Turtle Race. They were Maple Trails Resort, Thunder Lake Lodge, Pine Haven Resort, Pine Ridge Resort, Kee Nee Moo Sha Resort, Blue Water Resort, Timber Trails Resort, Woman Lake Lodge, Broadwater Lodge, and Birch Lane Resort. The Resort Turtle Race winner was six-year-old Annika Ecklund of San Diego, CA who with her family were vacationing at Thunder Lake Lodge.

Outlasting all 416 racers was the Grand Champion racer, 13 year-old Kolton Jacobson of Elk River, MN. The Grand Slowpoke Champion racer was 26 year-old Ryan Jansen of Minneapolis, MN.

A host of community volunteers worked at the races on Wednesday. Marisa Skajewski and Michaela Macfarlane helped Pat Boen, representing Gallery of Homes with judging. Ryan Skajewski donned the “Pokey” turtle suit and mixed with the participants during the afternoon. Rose Franta, Sara Fudge from the YMCA camp, and Dodee Colberg registered racers. Kathy Froehlig and Sara Felton sold tickets and souvenirs. Marge McDonald and Pat Bottast managed the prize table. A great group of young people who were participating in a Service and Leadership Camp at Camp Olson, plus a great group of community volunteers worked at the games. The community volunteers were Mary Ann Straley, Chuck Colberg, Donna Holloway, and Debbie and Laura Oates. The YMCA volunteers were Ellen Ytterberg, Evan Hansen, Tyler Stettler, Lindsey McAlister, Faith Filipiak, Andrew Baker, Thor Fogstad, Consuelo Fernandez, and Christy Petruska. Gordon Atzen, with the help of Bill Newell popped the corn. Dave Wodrich monitored the street. Set up and tear-down were handled by Steve Shallbetter, Don Shurtleff, Brandon Ahrenholz, Bob Carey, Tony Ozark, and a great team from Camp Olson. Bob Carey was in charge of hand washing. Announcing duties were handled by John and Sandy Weins and Steve Shallbetter. The next race is Wednesday, July 21.
