Turtle Race Archives - August 18th, 2010

Longville’s August 18 Turtle Race Report Betting that there would not be a turtle race on Wednesday a lot of people thought that early morning storms would stretch into the afternoon. But, the turtles prevailed and it turned out to be a great turtle-racing day. So great, in fact, that 352 racers jammed the racing circle to make this second-to-the-last season’s race a success.

Enthusiasm ran high for all the pre-race activities. The Chicken Dance singers were outstanding. They were Zach from Stillwater, MN; Raelin from Spring Valley, WI; Kayla from Clearwater, MN; and Reagan from Longville. The leaders of the YMCA dance were especially energetic. They were Tad from Mounds View, MN; Abby from Stillwater, MN; Rachel from Fort Dodge, IA; and Mitchell from Stillwater, MN.

Fourteen resorts participated in the Resort Turtle Race. They were Thunder Lake Lodge, Big Rock Resort, Broadwater Lodge, Red Wing Lodge, Minne Teepee Resort, Idle-A-While Resort, Pine Ridge Resort, Woman Lake Lodge, Sunset Bay Resort, Maple Trails Resort, Pine Haven Resort, Timber Trails Resort, Long Birch Lodge, and Camp O’ My Dreams Resort. The winner was six-year-old Madelynn Johnson from Stillwater, MN who with her family was vacationing at Thunder Lake Lodge.

Winner of an eight-ticket package to the Mall of America was ten-year-old Madisyn Hinike of Mankato, MN. The tickets were provided by BL Broadcasting of Brainerd. They operate WJJY FM, 106.7; B93.3 Country; Power Loon, 107.5 FM; Cool 103.5, Oldies; Business Radio KVBR 1340 AM; and The Fan, 1380 AM.

While the turtles were especially slow, their handlers were very excited on this day of racing. The Grand Winner was twenty-two –year-old Anne Holker who was racing for Reagan Tabaka. The Grand Slowpoke Winner was eight-year-old Stacia Zahn from Maple Grove, MN who was visiting her grandparents, Allan and Carol Zahn of Longville.

Wind, rain, and the threat of snow does not keep Turtle Race Volunteers from providing a great afternoon of family entertainment. Ryan Skajewski and Cathrine Stagnaro helped Pat Boen, representing Gallery of Homes with judging. Dodee Colberg and Sara Felton sold tickets and souvenirs. Ed Lammers, representing Lakeland Promotions and Marge McDonald managed the prize table. Game operators from businesses included: Jamie Riendeau from Thunder Lake Lodge, Jordan Loren from Frosty’s, Donna Holloway from Lori’s Luvs, Kam Kammueller from The Longville Inn, and Kathy Sweeney from Woodland Insurance. Community volunteers were Debbie and Laura Oates, Elsie Hagen, Chuck Colberg, and Carol & Olivia Charpentier. Gordon Atzen popped the corn. Don Shurtleff was in charge of handwashing.

Set-up and Tear-down was handled by a great team from Camp Olson, Don Shurtleff, and Steve Shallbetter. John and Sandy Weins and Steve Shallbetter were in charge of announcing duties. The last turtle race of the season is August 25.
