Turtle Race Archives - August 25th, 2010

Longville Turtle Race Report for Wednesday, August 25, 2010 This year’s extended turtle race proved to be very popular for area tourists, vacationing in late August, as 228 racers competed for top honors. The many new-to-turtle race crowd was wide-eyed as they took in and participated in all of the pre-race activities and games.

This race was especially significant as it was the last for John and Sandy Weins who are retiring after working fifteen years for the Longville Chamber and heading up the turtle races.

The Chicken Dance Singers dazzled the crowd with their melodic rendition of the Chicken Dance Song. They were Jade of Isle, MN; Arianna of Mora, MN; Thomas of Shakopee, MN and Ariana of St. Louis Park, MN. The leaders of the YMCA Dance were Marissa of Little Canada, MN; Ruby of Mora, MN; Alyson of Longville, MN; and Erin of Buffalo, MN.

The Resort Turtle Race attracted nine resorts to this event. They were Sunset Bay Resort, Long Birch Lodge, Pine Ridge Resort, Chippewa Lodge, Little Boy Resort, Minne Teepee Resort, Broadwater Lodge, Timber Trails Resort, and Red Wing Lodge. The winner was tenyear- old Caitlin Pott of Lake Elmo, MN who with her family was vacationing at Broadwater Lodge.

Winner of the eight-ticket package to the Mall of America was ten-year-old Jake Mertens from Prior Lake, MN. The tickets were provided by BL Broadcasting of Brainerd. They operate WJJY FM< 106.7; B93.3, Country; Power Loon, 107.5 FM; Cool 103.5, Oldies; Business Radio KVBR 1340 AM; and The Fan, 1380 AM.

Turtles started out the afternoon racing very slowly. They woke up soon and gave all of their handlers and the onlookers a thrill at their speed. The winners, emerging from the heat races and championship rounds were especially proud of their turtles. The Grand Winner was six-yearold Sydney Hooppaw of Apple Valley, MN. The Grand Slowpoke winner was twelve-year-old Jessica Bull of Duluth, MN.

For this last turtle race of the season, the volunteers helped entertain the many new racers and their relatives. Marisa Skajewski and Caitlin Stagnaro helped Pat Boen, representing Gallery of Homes with judging. Rose Franta, Stan Johnson, and Sue Meyer registered racers. Kathy Sweeney, representing Woodland Insurance and Sara Felton, sold tickets and souvenirs. Marge McDonald and Karen Nelson managed the prize table. Business game volunteers included Kam Kammueller, representing The Longville Inn. Community game volunteers were Elsie and Dennis Hagen, Saundra Martell, Chuck Colberg, Mike Froehlig, Mary Ann Straley, Kathy Froelig, and Debbie and Laura Oates. Gordon Atzen popped the corn. Gordon has manned the popcorn booth for over ten years. Bob Carey was in charge of hand-washing. Set-up and teardown was accomplished by Gerry Broshar, Tony Ozark, Bob Carey, Steve Shallbetter, a great team from Camp Olson, and a great team of volunteers from the Longville VFW Post 772, including Kam Kammueller, Don Shurtleff and several others from the Post. John and Sandy Weins and Gerry Broshar had the announcing duties.
