Turtle Racers from Around the Country Compete in Longville

The rain held off long enough 252 for turtle racers to compete in downtown Longville on Wednesday, June 13. They came from as far away as Colorado, Texas, West Virginia and California to compete for the titles of Grand Champion and Grand Slowpoke.

Race day started with the Chamber Resort Turtle Race, which was won by Ella Starkson, age 6, of Mantorville, Minnesota. Ella represented Long Birch Lodge. At the end of the day, Camden Pinke, age 4, of Colorado, earned Grand Champion honors. The Grand Slowpoke title went to hometown boy Trey Tabaka, age 6, of Longville.

Racers and non-racers alike had fun during the pre-race activities, which included hula-hoop contests, the Chicken Dance, the YMCA dance sponsored by Camp Olson YMCA, the Macarena, and the Hokey-Pokey.

Many volunteers assisted with the races, games and contests. Lead Judge Pat Boen was assisted by Cathy Stagnaro, Ryan and Marisa Skajewski. Rosalie Likens and Charlene Olson registered racers, while Lisa Garbe of Northlakes Marine and Auto and Jan Helmer sold tickets and souvenirs. Dennis Zuelke of the Longville Lakes Arts Alliance and Pat Bothast managed the prize table.

The Chamber Activity Committee welcomed Laurel Midthun, Roots Program Coordinator at Luther Dell Bible Camp, who brought a new group of volunteers to the turtle races. Other game operators included Darlene Simons, Mary Jo Shurtleff, Mike Froehlig, Susie Sietsema, Ed Lammers of Lakeland Promotions, Kathy Sweeney of Woodland Insurance and Christina Herheim of Bill Hansen Realty.

Katie Daudt made and sold fresh popcorn, raising funds for World Vision, and Orlette Gjerde from Northland Area Family Service Center supervised the hand-washing station. Setup and tear down were accomplished by Jake Woodworth and his team from Camp Olson YMCA, along with Don Shurtleff, Dennis and Anita Zaske and their granddaughters, and Tom Kutschied from VFW Post 772. Street manager was Dave Wodrich.

Kam Kammueller of Longville Inn entertained the crowd as Turtle Race Announcer, assisted in the announcing booth by Tom Lund.
