284 Racers Compete at Longville Turtle Races

The racetrack was fast and the turtles were eager to go on Wednesday, June 27, to round out turtle racing for the month of June. Throughout the afternoon 284 racers competed for the titles of Grand Champion and Grand Slowpoke.

Race day started with 11 competitors in the Resort Turtle Race, which was won by McKenna Montgomery, age 4, of Ottumwa, Iowa. McKenna represented Minne Teepee Resort. After a complete day of racing, Grand Champion honors went to Genevieve Hartmann, age 6, of Shakopee, Minnesota, and the Grand Slowpoke title was won by Peyton Lyons, age 14, of St. Louis, Missouri.

Pre-race games and contests included mini-golf sponsored by Birdies, the popular Chicken Dance, the YMCA Dance sponsored by Camp Olson YMCA, and recognition of all birthdays and anniversaries being celebrated in the crowd.

Many volunteers work hard to make the Turtle Races possible. Lead Judge Pat Boen was assisted by Cathy Stagnaro and Marisa Skajewski. Rose Franta and Dodee Colberg registered racers, while Lisa Garbe of Northlakes Marine and Auto and Sue Meyer sold tickets and souvenirs. Dennis Zuelke of the Longville Lakes Arts Alliance and Sharon Gilsrud managed the prize table. Game operators included Elsie Hagen, Mike and Kathy Froehlig, Rosalie Letson, Judy Blue, Kathy Sweeney of Woodland Insurance and Alexis Ames of Kee-Nee-Moo-Sha Resort. Chuck Colberg and Gordy Atzen entertained participants at the basketball and football games.

Katie Daudt made and sold fresh popcorn, raising funds for World Vision, and Kit Arneson from Northland Area Family Service Center supervised the hand-washing station. Setup and tear down were accomplished by Jake Woodworth and his team from Camp Olson YMCA, along with Don and Mary Jo Shurtleff, Dennis Zaske and Tom Kutschied from VFW Post 772. The street managers were Dave Wodrich and Stan Johnson.

Kam Kammueller of Longville Inn served as Turtle Race announcer, assisted by Steve Shallbetter and Tom Lund.
