Longville’s Fourth of July Festivities include 365 Turtle Racers
Even a July heat wave couldn't stop Longville's Turtle Races on the Fourth of July, as 365 intrepid turtle racers made their way to the center circle on July 4th to vie for the titles of Grand Champion and Grand Slowpoke. The regular races garnered 354 racers, while another 11 racers competed in the Chamber Resort Race.

The first race of the day, the Resort Turtle Race, was won by Nick Klingler, age 8, of Apple Valley, Minnesota. Nick represented Camp O’ My Dreams Resort.

Despite the weather, Alex Kollasch persevered to emerge as Grand Champion at the end of the afternoon. Alex, age 2, of Maple Grove, Minnesota, raced his own turtle, named Turtle Bom. Grand Slowpoke honors went to Riley Olson, age 9, of Coon Rapids, Minnesota.

Many volunteers also braved the heat to conduct the pre-race games and contests. They included Lead Judge Pat Boen, assisted by Cathy Stagnaro, Ryan and Marisa Skajewski. Rose Franta and Dodee Colberg registered racers, while Lisa Garbe and Char Olson sold tickets and souvenirs. Jan Helmer and Elsie Hagen managed the prize table. Game operators included Mary Ann Straley, Chuck Colberg, Dennis Zuelke of the Longville Lakes Arts Alliance, Kathy Sweeney of Woodland Insurance, Alexis Ames of Kee-Nee-Moo-Sha Resort and several counselors from Luther Dell Bible Camp.

Katie Daudt made and sold fresh popcorn, raising funds for World Vision, while Michelle Tessin, Bev Gaines and Barb Anderson from Northland Area Family Service Center supervised the hand-washing station. Setup and tear down were accomplished by Jake Woodworth and his team from Camp Olson YMCA, along with street managers Dave Wodrich and Stan Johnson.

Kam Kammueller of Longville Inn served as Turtle Race announcer, assisted by Tom Lund.
