320 Turtle Racers Compete in Longville; Only One More Turtle Race Remains

As we get closer to the first day of school, Longville’s August 15th turtle races provided a fun respite for children and families. Some 320 turtles raced on Main Street — 312 in the regular races and another eight in the Chamber Resort Race.

The resort race was won by Tommi Spengler, age 9, of Isle, Minnesota, representing Deer Trail Resort. A full afternoon of racing saw Grand Slowpoke honors go to Caitlin Salfer, age 11, of St. Peter, Minnesota. The title of Grand Champion went to Ryan Steffes, age 8, of Farmington, Minnesota. He raced his own turtle, “Lightning.” His sister, Ashley, also raced her own turtle, named “Bolt,” and won her racing heat.

The Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce would like to thank the many volunteers who make the weekly turtle races possible. The races were judged by Sean McDonald of Gallery of Homes and Cathy Stagnaro. This was Cathy’s last race of the year and we thank her for being such an important part of the turtle races.

Dodee Colberg and Charlene Olson registered racers, while Mary Ann Straley and Sara Felton sold tickets and souvenirs. Ed Lammers of Lakeland Promotions and Rosalie Letson managed the prize table.

Game operators included Elsie Hagen, Mike and Kathy Froehlig, Nan Ladenhoff, Darlene Simons, Chuck Colberg, Gordy Atzen, Dennis Zuelke of the Longville Lakes Arts Alliance, Kathy Sweeney of Woodland Insurance, Gary Kobi and his grandson, Owen Douglas, from CRMC-Longville Clinic.

Craig Riendeau of Thunder Lake Lodge registered racers for the Chamber Resort Race. Lori Daudt made and sold fresh popcorn to raise funds for World Vision, and Leah Monroe from Northland Area Family Service Center supervised the hand-washing station.

Setup and tear down were accomplished by Jake Woodworth and his team from Camp Olson YMCA, along with Dennis Zaske, Kam Kammueller and Don Shurtleff of VFW Post 772. Street managers were Dave Wodrich and Stan Johnson.

Pat Boen of Gallery of Homes entertained the crowd as turtle race announcer, assisted in the announcing booth by Tom Lund of VFW Post 772.

There is only one turtle race left this summer, next Wednesday, Aug. 22, rain or shine. Registration, games and contests begin at 1 p.m. The Chamber Resort Turtle Race is held at 2 p.m., followed by the regular racing heats. Bring your own turtle (the shell must measure at least 4 inches) or rent one at the races.

More photos are available on the Longville Chamber’s website, www.longville.com, and Facebook page. Proceeds from the turtle races benefit community activities sponsored by the Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce.
