Turtle Racers Brave Chilly Rain to Open 2013 Season

Longville, the official “Turtle Race Capital of the World,” officially opened its 2013 turtle racing season Wednesday, June 5. Despite temperatures in the low 50s and a constant drizzle, 41 hardy individuals and their families came to the event to have fun and race turtles.

It may have been one of the smallest fields on record, but all of the races were competitive. The Chamber Resort Race garnered three entrants and was won by Camo Horten, age 4, of Perry, Oklahoma, representing Little Boy Resort. Grand Champion honors went to Sara Fuchs, age 12, of East Bethel, Minnesota, and the Grand Slowpoke title went to Eric Struve, age 24, of Vinton, Iowa.

The Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all of the volunteers who braved the weather to make this event possible. The races were judged by Pat Boen of RE/MAX Lakes Area Realty and Cathy Stagnaro.

Dodee Colberg and Rose Franta registered racers, while Sara Felton and Sue Meyer sold tickets and souvenirs. Jan Thielen of Thielen’s Rainbow Bay Resort and Pat Bothast managed the prize table.

Game operators included Rosalie Letson, Elsie Hagen, Chuck Colberg, Gordy Atzen, Mary Jo Shurtleff, Ed Lammers of Lakeland Promotions, Lisa Garbe of Northlakes Marine and Auto, Dennis Zuelke of Salem Lutheran Church, Jim Garner of Birdies Mini-Golf and Water Wars and Kathy Sweeney of Woodland Insurance.

Counselors from Luther Dell Bible Camp supervised the hand-washing station. Nancy Loren and her daughter, Jordan, of Little Boy Resort registered racers for the Chamber Resort Race. Katie Daudt made and sold fresh popcorn to raise funds for World Vision.

Setup and tear down were handled by Jake Woodworth and his team from Camp Olson YMCA, along with Dennis Zaske, Don Shurtleff, Bob Saalborn, John Olsen and Tom Kutschied of VFW Post 772. Street managers were Dave Wodrich and Stan Johnson.

Kam Kammueller of Longville Inn entertained the crowd as turtle race announcer, assisted in the announcing booth by Tom Lund of VFW Post 772 and Steve Shallbetter.
More photos are available on the Longville Chamber’s website, www.Longville.com, and Facebook page. Proceeds from the turtle races benefit community activities sponsored by the Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce.
