Love was in the Air at the Longville Turtle Races

Wednesday, June 19, was a beautiful day for racing—and proposing—at the Longville turtle races. Congratulations to Dan Harris, who “popped the question” to Courtney Schneider in front of hundreds of turtle racers and their families. She said “yes,” to great applause. They are from Chillicothe, Illinois, and have a cabin in the Longville area. Dan said he’s been coming to the Longville turtle races since he was a child.

Most of the rest of the people who converged on downtown Longville were there to race turtles and enjoy the games and contests. The Chamber Resort Race, the first race of the day, was won by Samantha Johnson, age 9, of Austin, Minnesota, representing Timber Trails Resort.

Then the regular racing began. After holding 20 heats and racing 238 turtles, the Grand Champion title went to Elise Bates, age 3, of Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Turtle racing runs in the family—Elise's cousin, Landon Uthke, was Grand Champion in 2010. Grand Slowpoke honors went to Kalie Brown, age 4, of Sugar Grove, Illinois.

The Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all of the volunteers who make this event possible. Race judges were Pat Boen of RE/MAX Lakes Area Realty and Cathy Stagnaro.

Dodee Colberg and Rose Franta registered racers, while Sara Felton and Kathy Froehlig sold tickets and souvenirs. Pat Bothast and Sherry Fields managed the prize table.

Game operators included Pat Edwards, Gordy Atzen, Mike Froehlig, Mary Ann Straley, Chuck Colberg, Mary Jo Shurtleff, volunteers from Luther Dell Bible Camp, Dennis Zuelke of Salem Lutheran Church, Jim Garner of Birdies Mini-Golf and Water Wars and Kathy Sweeney of Woodland Insurance.

Craig Riendeau of Thunder Lake Resort registered racers for the Chamber Resort Race. Katie Daudt made and sold fresh popcorn to raise funds for World Vision.

Setup and tear down were handled by Jake Woodworth and his team from Camp Olson YMCA, along with Bob Saalborn, John Olsen and Tom Kutschied of VFW Post 772. Street managers were Dave Wodrich and Don Shurtleff.

Announcer Kam Kammueller of Longville Inn was assisted in the announcing booth by Tom Lund of VFW Post 772 and Steve Shallbetter.

Turtle races are held every Wednesday through Aug. 21 in downtown Longville. Race registration and the contests and games open at 1 p.m. The Chamber Resort Race is held at 2 p.m., followed by the regular turtle races. Painted turtles can be rented for $3 or you can bring your own.

More photos are available on the Longville Chamber’s website, www.Longville.com, and Facebook page. Proceeds from the turtle races benefit community activities sponsored by the Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce.
