After 319 Turtle Racers, both Championship Races end in Ties

The turtles were fast, the competition was stiff on Wednesday, June 26, in downtown Longville. At the end of a full day of racing, both the Grand Slowpoke and Grand Champion races ended in ties. Eight racers competed in the Chamber Resort Race and another 319 raced in the regular heats.

The Chamber Resort Race, the first race of the day, was won by Caleb Terwey, age 8, of Stillwater, Minnesota, representing Little Boy Resort. The Grand Champion title was shared by Marguerite DeFlorin, age 11, of South St. Paul, Minnesota, and Riley Keller, Age 7, of Adel, Iowa. Grand Slowpoke honors went to Nicholas Mersch, age 2, of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, and Kristina Donaldson, age 8, of Naperville, Illinois.

The Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce would like to recognize the volunteers who make this event possible. Race judges were Pat Boen of RE/MAX Lakes Area Realty and Cathy Stagnaro.

Dodee Colberg and Rose Franta registered racers, while Jan Thielen of Thielen’s Rainbow Bay Resort and Sara Felton sold tickets and souvenirs. Ed Lammers of Lakeland Promotions and Rosalie Letson managed the prize table, ably assisted by Noah Martin of St. Paul, Minnesota.

Game operators included Gordy Atzen, Mike and Kathy Froehlig, Chuck Colberg, Mary Jo Shurtleff, members of the Mouser family from Pine Haven Resort, volunteers from Luther Dell Bible Camp, Dennis Zuelke of Salem Lutheran Church, Jim Garner of Birdies Mini-Golf and Water Wars and Kathy Sweeney of Woodland Insurance.

Nancy Loren of Little Boy Resort registered racers for the Chamber Resort Race. Katie Daudt made and sold fresh popcorn, donating a portion of the proceeds to World Vision.

Setup and tear down were handled by Jake Woodworth and his team from Camp Olson YMCA, along with Don Shurtleff, Dennis Zaske, Tom Hasser, Bob Saalborn, John Olsen and Tom Kutschied of VFW Post 772. Street managers were Dave Wodrich and Stan Johnson.

Announcer Kam Kammueller of Longville Inn was assisted in the announcing booth by Tom Lund of VFW Post 772.

Turtle races will be held every Wednesday through Aug. 21 in downtown Longville. Race registration and the contests and games open at 1 p.m. The Chamber Resort Race is held at 2 p.m., followed by the regular turtle races. Painted turtles can be rented for $3 or you can bring your own.
