Longville Hosts International Turtle Race Event

The worldwide appeal of Longville’s turtle races was once again on display as the July 17th event attracted international participants and volunteers. Turtle racers came from as far away as Australia, while the Camp Olson YMCA crew included volunteers from Italy and Spain.

But, at the end of the day, two Minnesotans bested a field of 285 turtle racers to take home championship honors. Jack Peterson, age 6 of Plymouth was the Grand Winner and Cameron Rohweder, age 12 of St. Paul was named Grand Slowpoke The Chamber Resort Race, the first race of the day, was also won by a Minnesotan—Mari Britton, age 8 of Andover, representing Deer Trail Resort.

The Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce would like to recognize the volunteers who make this event possible. Race judges were Pat Boen of RE/MAX Lakes Area Realty, Cathy Stagnaro and Ryan Skajewski.

Dodee Colberg and Rose Franta registered racers, while Sara Felton and Sue Meyer sold tickets and souvenirs. Terri Felegy and Rosalie Letson managed the prize table.

Game operators included Elsie and Dennis Hagen, Lucinda Kline and grandsons Parker and Devon, Gordy Atzen, Chuck Colberg, Jim Garner of Birdies Mini-Golf and Water Wars, Kathy Sweeney of Woodland Insurance, Dennis Zuelke of Salem Lutheran Church and volunteers from Luther Dell Bible Camp and Camp Olson YMCA.
Craig Riendeau of Thunder Lake Lodge registered racers for the Chamber Resort Race. Katie Daudt made and sold fresh popcorn, donating a portion of the proceeds to World Vision.
Setup and tear down were handled by Jake Woodworth and his team from Camp Olson YMCA, along with Don Shurtleff, Dennis Zaske, Tom Carpenter, Tom Hasser, John Olsen, Bob Saalborn and Tom Kutschied of VFW Post 772. Street manager was Dave Wodrich.

Jake Sparts was the announcer, assisted by Tom Lund of VFW Post 772.

Turtle races will be held every Wednesday through Aug. 21 in downtown Longville. Race registration and the contests and games open at 1 p.m. The Chamber Resort Race is held at 2 p.m., followed by the regular turtle races. Painted turtles can be rented for $3 or you can bring your own.
More photos are available on the Longville Chamber’s website, www.Longville.com, and Facebook page. Proceeds from the turtle races benefit community activities sponsored by the Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce.
