Longville Closes Out 2013 Turtle Race Season with 254 Racers

The final turtle race day of the 2013 summer season, August 21st, offered perfect sunny weather, and 254 racers converged on downtown Longville to take up the challenge. The afternoon of games, contests and turtle racing culminated in a Minnesota sweep, with three Minnesotans taking home the top prizes.

Jacob Seeman, age 7, of Prior Lake, Minnesota, won the Grand Champion race while Sean Stockingar, age 42, of St. Cloud, Minnesota, was named Grand Slowpoke. The Chamber Resort Race was won by Arianna Bull, age 7, of Minnetonka, Minnesota, representing Pine Ridge Resort.

The Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce would like to recognize the volunteers who make this event possible. Race judges were Pat Boen of RE/MAX Lakes Area Realty and Cathy Stagnaro.

Dodee Colberg and Sue Meyer registered racers, while Sara Felton and Mary Ann Straley sold tickets and souvenirs. Ed Lammers of Lakeland Promotions and Pat Bothast managed the prize table.

Game operators included Dave Wodrich, Mike and Kathy Froehlig, Chuck Colberg, Gordy Atzen, Mary Jo Shurtleff, Dennis Zuelke of Salem Lutheran Church, Jim Garner of Birdies Mini-Golf and Water Wars, Lisa Garbe of Northlakes Marine and Auto and Kathy Sweeney of Woodland Insurance.

Nancy Loren of Little Boy Resort registered racers for the Chamber Resort Race. Katie Daudt made and sold fresh popcorn, donating a portion of the proceeds to World Vision.

Setup and tear down were handled by Jake Woodworth and his team from Camp Olson YMCA, along with Bob Saalborn, John Olsen, Don Shurtleff, Tom Hasser, Tom Carpenter, Tom Kutschied, Jerry Varner and his grandson, Zach, of VFW Post 772. Street managers were Stan Johnson and Dave Wodrich.

The official turtle race announcer was Kam Kammueller of Longville Inn, assisted by Tom Lund of VFW Post 772.

The Longville turtle races will resume next summer on Wednesdays, June through August.

The turtlemobile stage was full of birthday celebrants.

The last turtle race of the season also recognized lots of people celebrating August anniversaries.

The popular Chicken Dance was led by four energetic dancers. Kam Kammueller and Tom Lund managed the sound booth.
