Turtle Race Archives - July 8th, 2015

The summer heat and humidity showed up this week, but on Wednesday the crowds in Longville were greeted with weather that some might call “chilly”. A west wind and cool air kept all creatures tucked into a shell or a sweatshirt for most of the day.

A massive crew showed up once again to take part in the festivities, and by the time 3:00PM rolled around the racing circle and seen a total of 441 racers! To put things in perspective, that is nearly three times the population of Longville. You might think that the odds of winning in such a huge field is slim, but the races offer a lot of opportunity for kids to and adults alike cash in on something. The games that are played are like circus games, except they aren’t rigged so you can actually win. And unlike those traveling town carnival folks, the people who run the turtle race games are from right here in Longville, and they’re happy to see everyone walk away with a prize before the end of the day. And on top of that, the Mall of America winner walks away with a chance to go have some fun in the big city. And finally, just to be clear, the slowpoke winner is an award given to the turtle that actually does the worst during their first race. See? There are winners everywhere on Wednesday.

A little credit needs to be given to this year’s turtle wranglers.  Lukas and Tayler Emerson have been doing a fine job taking care of our cold-blooded friends.  You can tell just by watching that they care greatly about doing a good job and taking care of the turtles. They have got a great system in place to keep things moving right along, but there are a few things we can do to help them out. First, give them some space to work. Moving coolers of water and turtles can be hard work, so make sure to make way! And second, don’t be afraid to say thank you. The boys are there to help everyone have a good time. A pat on the back can go a long way. So, thank you Lukas and Tayler!
