Turtle Race Winners!

The Longville turtle races had a European flair on July 22, when  racers from as far away as Germany, Switzerland and Belgium converged on the downtown circle. In the end, however, a young man from nearby Bena, Minnesota, triumphed over 375 racers to be named Grand Champion.
Dustyn Coughlin, age 14, of Bena, raced his own mossback turtle to win the day. Collin Beck, 16, of Denver, Iowa, was named Grand Slowpoke. Another eight racers competed in the Chamber Resort Race. Ily Babler, age 4, from Becker, Minnesota, was the winner, representing Little Boy Resort.
Perfect summer weather added to the fun, as the competitors and their families and friends enjoyed the available games, contests and food. The Longville Chamber would like to thank all of the volunteers who make this event possible, especially race announcer John Weins and his assistants, Sandy Weins and Gerry Broshar.
We would also like to recognize our race judges, Kenzie Gross, Alyson Wieks and Pat Boen, and the volunteers from VFW Post 772, Camp Olson YMCA and Luther Dell Bible Camp.
Turtle races will be held each Wednesday through Aug. 19 in downtown Longville. Race registration and the contests and games open at 1 p.m. The Chamber Resort Race is held at 2 p.m., followed by the regular turtle races. Race registration is $3, which includes the rental of a turtle (or you can bring your own). Proceeds benefit community activities sponsored by the Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce.
