Turtle Race Winners!

Despite the gusty winds, almost 400 turtle racers and their families came to downtown Longville to compete, play games and enjoy the food and fun. In the end, it was three young girls who took home the day’s top prizes.
Grand Champion Marin Anderson, age 3, of Geneva, Illinois, bested 385 other racers to win the day. Grand Slowpoke was Alyssa Vacek, age 2, of Springfield, Missouri. Another 10 racers competed in the Chamber Resort Race, which was won by Emmery Jelsma, age 7, of Ankeny, Iowa. She represented Little Boy Resort.
It was so windy that visitors had trouble keeping their foam turtle hats on their heads and children were challenged at the games, as gusts took control of wiffle balls and Fishin’ for Fun poles. Still, thanks to all of the turtle race volunteers, everyone had a great time.
The Longville Chamber would like to thank all of the volunteers who make this event possible, especially race announcer John Weins and his assistants, Sandy Weins and Gerry Broshar.
We would also like to recognize our race judges, Anna Likens, Aly Wicks, Sam Shepard and Pat Boen, and the volunteers from VFW Post 772, Camp Olson YMCA and Luther Dell Bible Camp.
Turtle races will be held each Wednesday through Aug. 19 in downtown Longville. Race registration and the contests and games open at 1 p.m. The Chamber Resort Race is held at 2 p.m., followed by the regular turtle races. Race registration is $3, which includes the rental of a turtle (or you can bring your own). Proceeds benefit community activities sponsored by the Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce.
